Mini Grilled Cheese Hearts (Print version)

Adorable bite-sized sandwiches cut into heart shapes, perfect for special occasions or fun lunches.

# What you need:

→ Bread

01 - 6 slices soft white or whole wheat sandwich bread

→ Cheese

02 - 6 slices cheddar, American, or your favorite melting cheese

→ Butter

03 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

# Directions:

01 - Using a small heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out two hearts from each bread slice to yield 12 hearts total. Repeat with cheese slices to create 12 matching cheese hearts.
02 - Place one cheese heart between two bread hearts to form each mini sandwich.
03 - Spread a thin layer of softened butter on the outside of each assembled sandwich.
04 - Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Place sandwiches buttered side down and cook for 2–3 minutes until golden brown. Flip and cook the other side for another 2–3 minutes until cheese is melted and bread is crisp.
05 - Serve warm.

# Expert advice:

01 -
  • The buttery crispy edges paired with melty cheese center creates that perfect comfort food ratio in every single bite
  • Kids actually get excited about eating them and adults find themselves sneaking way more than they intended
  • They reheat surprisingly well making them excellent for meal prep lunches or party platters
02 -
  • Medium low heat is your friend here — high heat burns the bread before the cheese has time to melt properly
  • Don't crowd the pan or the steam will make them soggy instead of crisp
  • If using shredded cheese instead of slices, press it down firmly between the bread so it doesn't spill out while cooking
03 -
  • Use mayonnaise instead of butter for an extra crispy golden exterior that won't burn as easily
  • Place a heavy skillet or bacon press on top while the first side cooks for maximum cheese-to-bread contact
